Direct and Indirect Speech – Easy Grammar Guide Jasbir

Direct and Indirect Speech are important parts of English grammar. They help us report what someone has said. When we tell someone’s exact words, it is called Direct Speech. When we report the meaning of what someone said without using the exact words, it is called Indirect Speech.

1. What is Direct Speech?

Direct Speech tells the exact words spoken by a person. The sentence is written inside quotation marks (“ ”).

Structure:

Speaker + reporting verb + “exact words”

Examples:

• Ram said, “I am happy.”

• She said, “I am going to school.”

• The teacher said, “Work hard.”

In direct speech, the words remain exactly the same as spoken by the person.

2. What is Indirect Speech?

Indirect Speech tells what someone said, but not in the exact same words. Quotation marks are not used.

Structure:

Speaker + reporting verb + that/if/whether + reported statement

Examples:

• Ram said that he was happy.

• She said that she was going to school.

• The teacher told us to work hard.

In indirect speech, the sentence may change in tense, pronouns, and time words.

3. Main Changes in Indirect Speech

When we change a sentence from direct to indirect speech, three main things can change:

1. Pronouns

Pronouns change according to the speaker and listener.

Example:

She said, “I am tired.”

She said that she was tired.

2. Tense

The tense of the verb often moves one step back.

Example:

He said, “I play cricket.”

He said that he played cricket.
