The Building Blocks of English Grammar

Have you ever wondered how words work together to form meaningful sentences? Every English word has a specific job. These jobs are called Parts of Speech.

There are 8 Parts of Speech in English.

1. Noun (Naming Word)

A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.

Examples:

  • Riya is reading a book.

  • Delhi is a busy city.

  • Honesty is important.


2. Pronoun (Replacement Word)

A pronoun replaces a noun to avoid repeating it.

Examples:

  • Riya is reading a book. She likes it.

  • They are playing football.

Common pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they


3. Verb (Action or State Word)

A verb tells us what someone or something does or is.

Examples:

  • Birds fly.

  • She writes every day.

  • He is happy.


4. Adjective (Describing Word)

An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.

Examples:

  • She has a beautiful dress.

  • It is a cold morning.

  • I saw a small puppy.


5. Adverb (Describing a Verb, Adjective, or Another Adverb)

An adverb tells us how, when, where, or how often something happens.

Examples:

  • She sings beautifully.

  • He arrived early.

  • They always help others.


6. Preposition (Position Word)

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word.

Examples:

  • The keys are on the table.

  • We walked through the park.

  • She sat beside her friend.

Common prepositions: in, on, at, under, over, between, behind


7. Conjunction (Joining Word)

A conjunction joins words, phrases, or sentences.

Examples:

  • I like tea and coffee.

  • Hurry up or you'll miss the bus.

  • She stayed home because it was raining.


8. Interjection (Emotion Word)

An interjection expresses sudden feelings or emotions.

Examples:

  • Wow! That's amazing.

  • Oops! I dropped my phone.

  • Hurray! We won the match.
