📘 What is Present Continuous Tense?

Present Continuous Tense is used to talk about actions that are happening right now, at the moment of speaking, or around the present time.

Structure

Subject + am/is/are + Verb + ing + Object

Examples

✅ I am reading a book.
✅ She is cooking dinner.
✅ They are playing football.
✅ We are watching a movie.
✅ The baby is sleeping.


When Do We Use Present Continuous Tense?

1. Actions Happening Right Now

Use it for actions taking place at this moment.

Examples:

  • I am writing a letter.

  • She is talking on the phone.

  • They are studying in the library.


2. Temporary Actions

Actions that are happening for a short period.

Examples:

  • He is staying with his uncle this week.

  • We are living in Jaipur for a few months.

3. Changing Situations

Things that are changing or developing.

Positive Sentences

Negative Sentences

Structure:

Subject + am/is/are + not + Verb + ing

Examples

  • I am not sleeping.

  • Isn't = is not

  • Aren't = are not

Interrogative Sentences (Questions)

Structure:

WH Questions

Structure:

Spelling Rules for Adding "ING"

1. Most verbs

Add ing

  • Read → Reading

  • Play → Playing

  • Walk → Walking

2. Verbs ending in "e"

Remove e and add ing

  • Write → Writing

  • Make → Making

  • Drive → Driving

3. One vowel + one consonant

Double the consonant and add ing

  • Run → Running

  • Sit → Sitting

  • Swim → Swimming
